Bring Your Own Device Program - BYOx

The BYOx program is for families that may already have an appropriate device. A good laptop is an investment that will serve your child for at least 3-5 years. We recommend a Windows laptop for an optimised learning experience, however, we will continue to support students with devices purchased under a previous program.

Please be aware that there are also some challenges with BYOx.

  • Although the school can provide Microsoft Office and some Adobe programs for free, additional software will need to be purchased by families. This will vary depending on subject selections.
  • IT Technicians will not be able to diagnose or repair BYO devices apart from issues with connecting to the school network. (It is possible some devices may not connect to the network) Repairs and warranty claims will need to be handled by families.
  • Given the highly dynamic school environment, it is strongly recommended an accidental damage protection (ADP) is purchased for your valuable device.

Please refer to the information in the 'Related Links' to join the BYOx Program.

To enable students to easily access school resources on their own devices, the Department of Education is implementing ‘Enterprise Mobility Services’: a suite of products including ‘Microsoft Intune’. Information regarding Microsoft Intune can be found in the MS Intune Fact Sheet (PDF, 206KB).

On-boarding (or enrolling) your device allows it to connect to the school network and gain access to a portal with apps and important links. The device is best enrolled at home using instructions found in the 'Related Links' section of this page. Once enrolled, the device will automatically connect to the school network. Note: If your Windows device has previously connected to DETE-BYOx, it is important to perform steps of Certificate Selection When Connecting to DETE-BYOX After Enrolmentt (PDF, 250KB).

There are two parts to the on-boarding process. The first is to enrol in Intune and the second is to map school drives and printing. A tiny BYOx app is needed for the second part of onboarding and can be found via the Intune Self-Service Portal. It is recommended to save this app on the student's desktop for easy access.

What Intune does

This software enables mobile configuration settings to be deployed to devices to:

  • Enable Wi-Fi Connectivity to the school’s network
  • Enable the student’s departmental email account to be added to the device’s default mail application
  • Enable access to a school selected list of mobile or store applications
  • Enable access to a school selected list of websites
  • Enable students the ability to ‘factory reset’ a lost or stolen device remotely via the self-service console
  • Provide information on applications installed through Intune
  • Provide some information such as username, device serial number, device name, model, manufacturer, OS name and version
  • DETE-BYOx will be decommissioned, users will be smoothly transition to the new network EQNET

What Intune does not do

  • Does not monitor student’s use of the device
  • Does not track student’s locations
  • Does not provide information on personally installed applications
  • Does not allow uninstalling of personal applications

BYOD Software and Resources

BYOD software and resources can be found in the online hub known as the MACGlink. The best way to get to MACGlink is by memorising and typing in this address (case insensitive), a challenge for our over-reliance on Google and search engines:

Microsoft Office

All Queensland state school students can download free copies of the latest Microsoft Office to their personal home computers and mobile devices.

Students will need to use their school email address to sign in.

Your Office subscription lasts for as long as you’re a Queensland state school student.

For PC and Mac, visit Office Portal, login using your school email address, click through to install and follow the onscreen process.

If you have trouble, please refer to the instructions on how to download and install Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus to your personal home computers:

Adobe CC

Follow the detailed instructions found on MACGlink to install relevant software for your subjects. Do not purchase any products as the school already is licensed for your BYOD.
