MacGregor is proud of its rich history of Instrumental and Vocal Music. In 2018, a new program, aimed at extending our talented musicians was born - Music Excellence. This 3-year audition based course provides a platform for students, whom have learnt an instrument in primary school, to further their skills, love and passion for music.
The program structure focuses on three key components: Performance, Composition and Musicology. Derived from the senior school syllabus, students can be assured that their learning is tailored to the individual, and sets them up to be prepared, focused and driven for future studies in music
Each week, students receive 2 theoretical/knowledge based lessons plus a practical lesson, thus developing ensemble skills and providing an opportunity to apply their knowledge to their chosen instrument. Music Excellence liaisons closely with the students instrumental teacher, to ensure a cohesive, consistent message is given across all aspects of music. Singers and piano players have the ability to learn an instrument, which is provided free of charge by Education Queensland.
Students also have the unique opportunity to form a Symphony Orchestra, with students in the 7-9 Music Excellence class. This ensemble, rehearsing on a Friday afternoon, works closely with guest conductors including Dr. Rob McWilliams – Yamaha Australia, Jonny Ng – Camerata and for 2020, local musician and clinician Dr. Emma Di Marco.
