Community involvement
ANZAC Day
Anzac Day commemorations are a significant part of our community involvement at MacGregor SHS.
Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal
The Salvation Army provides a number of services to help the most vulnerable members of our community.
ANZAC Day
ANZAC Day is not only a major event at our school but also across the world. This day is commemorated in cities and towns across Australia and New Zealand as well as a number of historical sites linked to the sacrifices made by our service men and women. Our ceremony is based on the theme of “respect” where, as a community, we acknowledge the contributions and sacrifices made that has shaped the Australia we live in today. We also pay our respect to the traditional custodians of the land through our “Welcome to Country”.
We are always thankful for the returned servicemen from the Sunnybank District RSL who participate in our ceremonies, particularly in the “Passing the Spirit” section. At this point our school captains, on behalf of our community, pledge to keep the spirit of ANZAC alive. Our commemoration concludes with a small flower ceremony where our Social Science captains and a boy and girl from each year level join with our returned servicemen in placing a floral tribute at our commemorative plaque.
On ANZAC day itself, MacGregor has a fine tradition of joining the Sunnybank District RSL ANZAC Day march with over fifty students giving up their morning to continue paying respect. Our school captains also play roles in the ceremony to re-affirm our school’s commitment to not only keeping the ANZAC Spirit alive but enhancing it. This is carried on by our musicians who provide other ceremonies with buglers for the Last Post and Reveille.
Lest We Forget
Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal
The Red Shield appeal is an instantly recognisable fund raising event that happens each year across the country. The money raised is used by the Salvation Army to provide services for community members with problems caused by addiction, financial stress and natural disasters. MacGregor has a proud tradition of supporting this appeal with a significant number of senior students volunteering their time to be collectors for the appeal. The ongoing willingness of our students to help others demonstrates the caring and supportive nature of our school.
