MacGregor State High School recognises that students learn and demonstrate their knowledge in different ways. Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA) support students who may have disability, impairment and/or medical conditions or experience other circumstances that may affect their ability to read, respond to and participate in assessment. Access arrangements and reasonable adjustments (AARA) are designed to assist these students.

AARA can be provided for both junior and senior students. These arrangements are designed to give students a fair opportunity to show what they know and can do, without changing the expectations of the task. Appropriate documentation is required, and early application is important to ensure adjustments can be put in place when needed.

For senior students, all AARA decisions are made in line with the guidelines set by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) to ensure consistency and equity.

Long Term AARA

Long Term AARA applications are available for students with ongoing conditions, such as chronic medical, cognitive, physical or psychological needs, that impact their ability to access assessment over an extended period. A Long-term AARA Application Form is provided in person by a staff member supporting the student’s application (e.g. Guidance Officer, Diverse Learning Coordinator, HOSES or Head of Department Senior Secondary). This ensures that appropriate adjustments are identified and that the required documentation is clearly explained.

Short Term AARA

Students in Year 11 and Year 12 who need to apply for an AARA due to a short-term illness or misadventure impacting on their ability to participate in assessment must complete a short-term AARA application and provide supporting documentation.

Students may apply for short-term AARA for:

  • Illness and Misadventure for unforeseen instances such as when a student is absent on the day of an examination due to illness and/or a student does not submit an extended writing task (i.e. assignment, project) by the due date and time. ie: the night before the due date, a student suffered a broken arm when playing sport.

  • External Assessment (EA) – for instances where illness or misadventure impacts on the participation in Senior External Assessment (Year 12 only)
