At MacGregor State High School we recognise that Junior Secondary is a time when young people are experiencing the greatest physical, emotional, intellectual and social changes in their lives. We acknowledge that these unique characteristics should be addressed within current educational programs designed specifically for students in Junior Secondary.
Our educational program reflects the philosophy that students in Year 7, 8 & 9:
• Learn best in a positive environment where they feel safe and supported
• Are 21st Century learners who are able to navigate a highly technological and information rich world and therefore need extensive opportunities to become confident, creative and productive users of technology
• Need opportunities to be global citizens, to act with moral and ethical integrity, respecting and valuing diversity
• Achieve improved learning outcomes when they have the opportunity to learn with students of similar ability and learning styles. At Macgregor we refer to this individualised approach as “Targeting for Success”
• Develop their individual potential when recognition for effort is provided
• Feedback for improvement over accomplishment inspires a “growth mindset”
• Enjoy collaborating and working in teams
• Require sustained opportunities to build their skills in creative and critical thinking
• Are highly visual learners who learn best when the information is emotionally engaging and relevant to them
• Attain improved results when they have deeper relationships with fewer teachers than a variety of teachers
• Need to be involved in programs of rigour and challenge
• Are motivated to learn when they can explore themselves and the world they live in
